Texas A&M spring football is underway, and one of the biggest storylines for Mike Elko’s team is the rise of Rueben Owens.
As the Aggies begin evaluating a reshaped 2026 roster, Owens steps into spring practice as the clear lead running back and one of the most important pieces of the offense heading into next season.
That’s a big moment for a player who’s waited for it.
After injuries limited him to just two appearances in 2024, Owens bounced back last season and gave Texas A&M a steady presence in the backfield.
The senior rushed for 639 yards and five touchdowns while averaging 5.4 yards per carry, numbers that showed his explosiveness but also hinted there’s another level still available.
Now, with Le’Veon Moss gone and the job fully in his hands, Owens has a chance to become the featured weapon this offense needs.
That’s clearly the goal this spring. Owens said he’s spent the offseason adding strength, and that could be one of the most important developments for the Aggies’ offense.
He has always had the talent and burst, but becoming a more durable, physical every-down back could change the look of Texas A&M’s entire attack.
If Owens can run through contact more consistently and keep defenses honest, it should also help quarterback Marcel Reed and prevent the offense from becoming too dependent on the passing game.
That balance matters in the SEC. Texas A&M also has intriguing depth behind Owens.
Freshman KJ Edwards, sophomore Jamarion Morrow, and redshirt freshman Tiger Riden give the Aggies multiple options in the rotation, which could help keep the running game fresh over the course of the season.
But make no mistake, this backfield starts with Owens.
If he stays healthy and the offensive line holds up, a jump from 5.4 yards per carry to 6.0 isn’t unrealistic.
And if that happens, Owens won’t just be productive. He could become the engine of Texas A&M’s 2026 offense.
