Texas A&M’s Maroon & White Game turned serious when linebacker Daymion Sanford suffered a leg injury, overshadowing strong defensive play and Isaiah Horton’s big half.
Texas A&M football got an encouraging look at its defense in the Maroon & White Game on Saturday, but the biggest halftime storyline had little to do with the scoreboard.
The White team carried a 10-9 lead into the break after sophomore linebacker Noah Mikail jumped a pass from freshman quarterback Helaman Casuga and returned it for a touchdown, yet the mood shifted dramatically on the final play of the half when veteran linebacker Daymion Sanford went down with an apparent lower-body injury.
Sanford had to be helped from the field on a medical cart, with an air cast visible as he exited.
For an Aggies defense looking to build momentum ahead of the 2026 season, that was the kind of scene nobody wanted to see.
Before the injury, Texas A&M’s defense was the clear star of the afternoon. The Aggies’ front seven flew around, pressured the quarterback and forced mistakes, with Mikail’s pick-six standing out as the biggest splash play.
On the other side of the ball, Alabama transfer wide receiver Isaiah Horton showed why there’s so much excitement around him, piling up 79 receiving yards at 16.3 yards per catch and giving the offense a needed spark.
Still, Sanford’s status now becomes one of the most important storylines leaving spring camp.
The senior emerged as one of Texas A&M’s most dependable linebackers last season, finishing with 57 tackles, 3.5 sacks and an interception while earning SEC Player of the Week honors twice.
With Taurean York now off to the 2026 NFL Draft, Sanford had been positioned to take on an even bigger role in the Aggies' linebacker room.

If the injury proves serious, Texas A&M could be forced to lean harder on Ray Coney and Noah Mikail, while true freshmen like Que Beck and Tank King may need to grow up fast.
For now, the Aggies are left waiting and hoping for better news.
