Texas A&M football still owns the nation’s No. 1-ranked 2027 recruiting class, but Thursday brought a sharp reminder that even the hottest programs don’t win every heavyweight fight.
Five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson, one of the biggest defensive prizes in the 2027 cycle, committed to South Carolina over Texas A&M, Michigan and a crowded group of national contenders.
For the Aggies, this one stings. Dobson isn’t just another blue-chip name on the board.
He’s a 6-1, 185-pound corner from North Carolina with elite length, high-end coverage traits and the kind of recruiting profile that usually changes the temperature of a defensive back room.
Dobson is rated as the No. 6 overall player in the 2027 class by the Rivals Industry rankings, carrying a 97.31 composite grade.
He’s also listed as the No. 2 cornerback nationally and the top player in North Carolina. That’s exactly the type of prospect Mike Elko and Texas A&M have been stacking during this monster recruiting run.
Instead, South Carolina landed the knockout punch.

Dobson visited South Carolina nine times, while the Aggies reportedly got him on campus four times.
In modern recruiting, especially with NIL, relationships and repeated in-person contact matter as much as the pitch itself. South Carolina didn’t just recruit Dobson. It stayed in his orbit.
Texas A&M had plenty working in its favor. The Aggies’ 2027 class has become a magnet for elite talent, and there’s real power in selling a prospect on joining the best group in the country.
But proximity helped South Carolina keep constant pressure on the recruitment, and that ultimately proved too much for A&M and Michigan to overcome.
Texas A&M still has six five-star commitments and 10 four-stars in the 2027 class.
The defensive backfield is hardly empty, either. Five-star cornerback Raylaun Henry remains in the fold and is considered one of the top corner prospects in the country.
Losing Dobson hurts because elite corners are premium currency in the SEC. But Texas A&M has built enough recruiting muscle under Elko to absorb a high-profile miss without losing momentum.
South Carolina won the day. The Aggies still own the class.
