Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko may be enjoying a short break during the recruiting dead period, but make no mistake ... the Aggies’ 2027 recruiting board is still very much in motion.
At the center of that momentum is five-star cornerback John Meredith, one of the most coveted defensive backs in the nation.
The elite 2027 prospect has quickly become a priority target in College Station, and recent developments suggest Texas A&M is firmly in the thick of the race.
Meredith, widely regarded as one of the top cornerbacks in his class, has the kind of profile SEC programs covet: length, recovery speed, and advanced ball skills.
As a sophomore, he reportedly racked up multiple interceptions while consistently shadowing top receivers, showcasing the shutdown traits that have earned him national attention.
Alabama has surged as a serious contender following a recent visit, positioning the Crimson Tide as Texas A&M’s most significant challenger.
Still, the Aggies have reason for optimism.
When Mike Elko promoted Bryant Gross-Armiento to cornerbacks coach, it signaled stability within the defensive staff after Jordan Peterson departed for Kansas State to reunite with Collin Klein.
Any concerns about turnover impacting relationships appear minimal. Meredith has made it clear that his bond with the Texas A&M staff remains intact, and continuity in communication has only strengthened the Aggies’ standing.
That mirrors the reaction of freshman defensive back Brandon Arrington, who has also spoken highly of Gross-Armiento’s energy and teaching style. For Elko, retaining recruiting traction at a premium position like cornerback is critical as he continues reshaping the roster with his defensive blueprint.
An official visit to College Station is in the works, and Meredith is targeting a spring commitment timeline, though that decision could extend into early summer. Even if Texas A&M secures a verbal pledge, the recruitment will be far from over.
Alabama’s track record of developing NFL-caliber defensive backs ensures the Crimson Tide will remain aggressive until pen meets paper on Early Signing Day.
For now, however, the Aggies appear well positioned. Landing a five-star defensive back in the 2027 class would further validate Elko’s recruiting strategy and provide a cornerstone piece for the program’s long-term defensive identity.
Recruiting never truly pauses in the SEC ... and in this battle, Texas A&M is very much in the fight.
