Texas Longhorns basketball returns to Austin Saturday night for a crucial SEC matchup against Oklahoma, and the stakes couldn’t be clearer.
With the postseason approaching, Texas needs to defend its home floor against the Sooners and build momentum heading toward conference tournament play.
The Longhorns (18-12, 9-8 SEC) enter the game looking to bounce back after a tough loss to Arkansas, but playing at home has been a strength all season.
Texas has posted an impressive 12-4 record inside Moody Center, averaging 84.3 points per game while outscoring opponents by nearly eight points.
That offensive firepower is led by Dailyn Swain, who continues to be one of the most productive players in the SEC.
Swain is averaging 17.7 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.7 steals per game, stuffing the stat sheet and providing leadership on both ends of the floor.
The Longhorns are also getting strong scoring production from Matas Vokietaitis, who has been heating up recently. Over the last 10 games, the forward has averaged 17.0 points per contest, including a 21-point performance in Texas’ last outing.
Texas already holds one victory over Oklahoma this season, taking down the Sooners 79-69 on Jan. 31 behind an 18-point performance from Swain. Replicating that balanced effort will be key again this weekend.
Oklahoma arrives in Austin with a 16-14 overall record and a 6-11 mark in SEC play, but the Sooners have shown flashes of dangerous offensive ability.
Their perimeter shooting could create problems, as Oklahoma averages 10 3-pointers per game, nearly three more than Texas typically allows.
Veteran guard Nijel Pack has been a major contributor during that stretch, averaging 3.7 made 3s over the last 10 games. If Pack gets hot from deep, Oklahoma can quickly close scoring gaps.
Inside, Mohamed Wague provides a physical presence for the Sooners, averaging 7.1 points and 6.8 rebounds per game while helping anchor their defense.
Statistically, the matchup features two teams that play at a similar pace. Texas has averaged 80.9 points over its last 10 games, while Oklahoma has posted 80.3 points per contest during that same span.
Still, the Longhorns’ home-court advantage and offensive balance could be the difference-maker.
If Swain continues to lead the charge and Texas keeps its offense flowing, the Longhorns will have a strong chance to sweep the season series ... and take another important step toward a strong finish in the SEC standings.
