Texas faces a dangerous Florida offense Saturday in Austin. Jadan Baugh, Aaron Philo and Dallas Wilson present three major challenges for the Longhorns defense.
Texas football has little time to dwell on its disappointing Red River Rivalry loss. The No. 7 Longhorns return home Saturday to face a Florida Gators offense loaded with enough talent to turn another SEC showdown into a nightmare.
Florida arrives at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium with a 4-2 record after consecutive losses to Missouri and South Carolina. But don't mistake the Gators' recent struggles for a lack of offensive firepower.
Florida averages 473.8 yards and 41.7 points per game, and three playmakers should command Steve Sarkisian's attention.
Jadan Baugh | Running Back
If there's one player Texas absolutely cannot allow to establish himself, it's Jadan Baugh.
The explosive sophomore leads Florida with 672 rushing yards through six games, averaging 112 yards per contest. He's also been responsible for 12 touchdowns this season.
Baugh combines physical running with impressive acceleration, making him dangerous both between the tackles and when he reaches the perimeter.
However, opposing defenses have recently found success limiting him. South Carolina held Baugh to 59 yards on 15 carries in Florida's 38-19 loss Saturday.
For Texas, the formula is straightforward: win at the line of scrimmage, maintain gap discipline and force Florida into predictable passing situations.
Aaron Philo | Quarterback
Florida quarterback Aaron Philo has quietly put together an impressive statistical season despite the Gators' recent setbacks.
The sophomore has completed 105 of 149 passes for 1,341 yards, nine touchdowns and three interceptions, connecting on 70.5 percent of his attempts.
Those numbers demonstrate why Texas cannot overlook Florida's passing attack.
Philo completed 21 of 28 passes for 227 yards and a touchdown against South Carolina, but an interception, lost fumble and three sacks contributed to another disappointing afternoon.
That's where the Longhorns have an opportunity.
Texas edge rusher Colin Simmons and the defensive front must pressure Philo without allowing him comfortable throwing lanes.
If Texas can disrupt his timing and create third-and-long situations, the Longhorns could force the young quarterback into costly mistakes.
Dallas Wilson | Wide Receiver
Florida's most productive receiving threat is sophomore Dallas Wilson, a 6-3 target who presents matchup problems with his size and ability to create explosive plays.
Wilson leads the Gators with 26 receptions for 376 yards and three receiving touchdowns.
He's averaging 14.5 yards per catch and has already produced a 104-yard performance against Campbell.
Against South Carolina, Wilson caught eight passes for 74 yards, remaining productive despite Florida's offensive struggles.
Texas must prevent Wilson from getting free downfield while also limiting his opportunities after the catch.
The Longhorns enter Saturday needing a convincing response after their 27-24 loss to Oklahoma.
Florida, meanwhile, has dropped two straight games by a combined 47 points.
That creates an interesting matchup between two programs desperate to regain momentum.
The biggest priority for Texas is making Florida one-dimensional. If the Longhorns contain Baugh, pressure Philo and keep Wilson from delivering explosive plays, they'll significantly improve their chances of bouncing back.
But overlook this Florida offense, and Texas could find itself dealing with another uncomfortable Saturday in Austin.
