AUSTIN - Last year, Texas basketball signed a player with a familiar last name for its 2026 class.
Austin Goosby, brother of Texas offensive tackle Trevor Goosby, signed for the Longhorns last November, and he's not just any recruit.
Along with being a highly rated four-star and 19th-ranked player in the class of 2026 (according to 247 Sports), Goosby was recently named as a McDonald's All-American.
The McDonald's All-American game is regarded by many as the top showcase for elite basketball prospects. Past participants include Lebron James, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson, Kevin Durant, etc.
Goosby will be the 24th future Longhorn to play in the showcase.
In short, if a player is invited, they have the potential to be one of basketball's next stars. Texas will hope that holds true for Goosby.
The 6-5, 175-pound guard from Melissa, Texas, has turned heads while playing for Texas' top high school basketball team, Dynamic Prep (founded by former McDonald's All-American, Jermaine O'Neal).
Goosby leads the team in points per game with 17, 4.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.6 steals per contest.
His contributions have helped Dynamic Prep to a 16-1 record thus far.
In terms of tools for the next level, Goosby has it all. He fits the new-age big guard prototype teams are looking for, standing at 6-5 with a 6-9 wingspan. He pairs that size with a great vertical, allowing him to be a dominant force at the rim.
Scouts have also noted Goosby's elite ability to read games and make timely decisions on the basketball court. These are instincts of a true point guard, a profile the Longhorns haven't had in a couple of seasons.
If there's one knock on his game, it's his lack of an outside jump shot, but that can be fixed with development as we've seen with many college basketball players.
It's hard to break into the rotation as a freshman, but with guys like Jordan Pope and Tramon Mark in their last season, Texas is going to need some guards.
Texas head coach Sean Miller is on a mission to revive Texas basketball, and a player of Goosby's caliber could be at the center of that revolution.
