Former Texas Longhorns running back Jaydon Blue says he’s matured after a quiet Cowboys rookie year and is fighting for a bigger 2026 role.
Jaydon Blue’s first NFL season didn’t exactly look like the explosive Texas Longhorns highlight reel Dallas Cowboys fans hoped they were getting.
Now, Year 2 feels like the real test.
The former Texas running back entered the league as a fifth-round pick with speed, burst and big-play upside, but his rookie season with the Cowboys never truly got off the ground.
Blue didn’t make his regular-season debut until Week 5 and played in only five games, finishing with 38 carries for 129 yards and one touchdown.
That’s not the kind of impact Blue wanted.
It’s definitely not the kind of role Texas fans expected after watching him flash game-breaking ability in burnt orange.
But Blue isn’t pretending everything was perfect. That’s the important part.
“I didn’t start off like I should have,” Blue said, via Jon Machota of The Athletic. “Maybe if it was not practicing the right way or just on a maturity level, I think I wasn’t really there.”
That’s a pretty honest admission from a young player trying to stick in a league that doesn’t wait around for anyone.
The Cowboys clearly wanted more from Blue last season. Questions about his habits followed him through the summer, and head coach Brian Schottenheimer later said he was “very honest” with the running back about why he spent so much time inactive.
Apparently, the message landed.
Blue said he’s spent the offseason reviewing what went wrong, listening to veterans and applying what coaches told him. Schottenheimer also noted that Blue returned this spring with a “different look,” which is exactly what Dallas needed to see before training camp.
For Blue, the path still won’t be easy. Javonte Williams sits ahead of him in the Cowboys’ backfield, and Dallas isn’t handing out carries based on college reputation.
Blue has to prove he can practice like a pro, protect the football, handle assignments and bring juice when his number is called.
Still, the talent hasn’t vanished.
Texas fans know what Blue can do in space. Cowboys fans only saw flashes. If the maturity finally matches the explosiveness, Jaydon Blue could go from forgotten rookie to dangerous backfield weapon fast.
Training camp will tell us if the lesson stuck.
