Texas suffers a massive recruiting setback as five-star receiver Easton Royal flips to Florida, leaving Steve Sarkisian scrambling to replace an elite 2027 prospect.
The Texas Longhorns suffered a major recruiting blow Sunday when five-star wide receiver Easton Royal flipped his commitment to Florida, delivering another frustrating development for Steve Sarkisian's program just hours after its disappointing loss to Oklahoma.
Royal, the nation's No. 1 wide receiver in the 2027 recruiting class according to the Rivals Industry Rankings, had been committed to Texas since November 29, 2025.
But the New Orleans standout is now headed to Gainesville.
"Dreams to reality," Royal told Rivals recruiting analyst Hayes Fawcett when announcing his decision.
The departure represents a significant setback for a Texas recruiting class that was counting on Royal to become one of its offensive cornerstones.
The Brother Martin High School star is ranked No. 5 nationally in the Rivals Industry Rankings and is considered the top prospect in Louisiana.
His combination of speed, explosiveness and playmaking ability made him one of the most coveted offensive recruits in the country.
During his 2025 high school season, Royal caught 53 passes for 1,151 yards and 17 touchdowns, averaging an impressive 21.7 yards per reception.
Those numbers help explain why programs across the SEC continued pursuing him despite his commitment to Texas.
Florida ultimately won the battle.
Royal had maintained contact with other programs throughout his recruitment, including LSU, but recent visits to Gainesville helped push the Gators into the lead.
He was particularly impressed with the energy surrounding first-year Florida coach Jon Sumrall and the direction of the Gators' offense.
"It's just way more energy in the air, completely different philosophy," Royal told 247Sports while explaining Florida's appeal.
For Sarkisian, the timing couldn't be much worse.
Texas is coming off Saturday's 27-24 loss to Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry, and the Longhorns are preparing to host Florida this weekend.
Now, they'll face the Gators knowing one of their most prized offensive commitments has chosen the opposing sideline.
Royal's departure also leaves Texas with just two committed wide receivers in its 2027 class, increasing the pressure on Sarkisian and receivers coach Chris Jackson to secure another elite pass catcher before December's early signing period.
The Longhorns have successfully developed and recruited NFL-caliber receivers, including Xavier Worthy, Adonai Mitchell and Matthew Golden. But replacing a prospect with Royal's credentials won't be easy.
Florida, meanwhile, adds another five-star prospect to Sumrall's first full recruiting class, strengthening the Gators' efforts to build a championship-caliber roster.
Recruiting commitments aren't binding until players sign, so Texas could theoretically continue pursuing Royal.
But his decision makes one thing clear.
The Longhorns didn't just lose a five-star receiver. They lost one of the potential centerpieces of their 2027 recruiting class - to an SEC opponent they'll face Saturday.
