After a stalled rookie year, the former Texas speedster must prove his maturity to anchor Dallas’s "Thunder and Lightning" backfield and transform raw potential into consistent production.
Of all the Dallas Cowboys storylines to follow when training camp begins in Oxnard in a few weeks, the status of Jaydon Blue might sit at the top of my list.
After a rookie season that was a wash due to Blue's inability to grasp what the Cowboys coaching staff wanted from him, plus a lack of maturity, which he himself has stated was a factor, Jaydon has it all to do.
His speed and receiving ability are clearly something the Cowboys want to utilize - he showed off all of that during his days in the University of Texas backfield - but Blue has to prove he's worthy of getting on the field.
Week 18 last season saw Blue get his most work, and the speed, burst, and acceleration that made him a nightmare to cover in college were evident.
We know that Dallas wants Blue to take the backup role behind Javonte Williams as part of a "Thunder and Lightning" plan, but we don't actually know what sort of season Blue really needs to have, do we?
As a backup, his touches will be fleeting, but it will be what he does with those touches that counts.
And when dissecting Jon Machota's list of Cowboys players who need to step up in The Athletic, 105.3 The Fan's RJ Choppy detailed what he thinks Blue has to do in 2026.
"He needs to be active for every game, he needs to be getting the second most carries on the team or touches, from a running back perspective, and produce like, that's it, that's the reality of it," Choppy said.
Tick, tick, and tick.
Blue's 2025 season stat-wise doesn't make for good reading.
Just five games (zero starts), 129 yards, and a touchdown from 38 carries. Just 78 offensive snaps and 11 special teams. That won't cut it.
So, for the ex-Longhorns speedster Blue to take his game to a new level, being active in every game, not a healthy scratch like he was most of his rookie year, and when he gets his chance, he's got to be productive.
The only game in which he got a good amount of touches was Week 18 against the New York Giants, as he rushed for 64 yards and a touchdown from 16 carries (4.0 yards per carry).
That is the sort of production Blue needs.
Now, with Williams having 11 games of 15+ carries, I'd imagine that with Blue riding shotgun, those numbers will go down, and a more balanced approach could be forthcoming.
Is a rep split of what Dallas did in 2022 with Ezekiel Elliott (231) and Tony Pollard (193) going to happen? Not likely.
But what about 2024 when Rico Dowdle (235 carries) and Elliott (74 carries) shared the load? Is that what transpires in 2026?
That could work.
But regardless of how many touches Blue gets, he's got to be productive. That's the bottom line.
And if he isn't Malik Davis and Phil Mafah will be waiting in the wings to take his job.
