Texas Tech Dares Texas After Sarkisian’s Big Talk
Joey McGuire just turned Steve Sarkisian’s Texas Tech jab into a dare, and now the Texas Longhorns have a choice ... laugh it off or let this thing get real.
The Texas-Texas Tech football rivalry hasn’t needed much help finding juice over the years, but Sarkisian gave it plenty when he questioned the Red Raiders’ path compared to Texas’ schedule.
His comment landed like a lit match in Lubbock.
“There's a team in our state in another conference with a schedule that I would argue, if I played with our twos and threes [on the depth chart], we could go undefeated,” Sarkisian said. “And they'll probably make the CFP this year.”
That’s not subtle. That’s not coach-speak. That’s a direct shot.
McGuire didn’t duck it. He leaned all the way in.
“We would love to play Texas,” McGuire said Thursday.
That’s where this gets fun. McGuire said Texas Tech would be willing to buy out games against Texas State and Abilene Christian to clear room for Texas.
In other words, this wasn’t just a social media clapback. This was a real challenge with a calendar attached.
And if the Longhorns don’t want to go to Lubbock? McGuire tossed out another possibility: AT&T Stadium.
He said Texas Tech board of regents member Cody Campbell has had conversations with Dallas Cowboys CEO Stephen Jones about potentially putting Texas and Texas Tech inside Jerry World.
That would be box office stuff.
Texas is trying to prove it belongs at the front of the national championship conversation. Sarkisian has Arch Manning, a loaded recruiting machine and SEC credibility to sell.
Texas Tech has been building aggressively under McGuire and has invested like a school tired of being treated like a punchline.
McGuire’s best line, though, was the sharpest.
“We'll find out if their twos and threes can win in this conference,” McGuire said.
That’s the kind of quote that sticks.
Sarkisian already had to walk back his “basket weaving” comment about Ole Miss transfers, calling it a “poor choice of words.” Now he’s got another fire to manage.
Texas can say it’s above the noise. Texas can say the SEC schedule is enough. But McGuire gave the Longhorns an easy way to prove the point.
