Texas fell 6-3 to Tennessee in its WCWS opener, leaving the Longhorns needing a perfect run to keep their championship hopes alive.

The Longhorns dropped their Women’s College World Series opener 6-3 to Tennessee, and now the math is brutally simple.

For a team that already had to fight through elimination pressure in the NCAA Super Regional round, this is familiar territory. That doesn’t make it any less tense.
Tennessee landed the first haymaker in the second inning. Elsa Morrison jumped on a pitch from Texas ace Teagan Kavan and launched a three-run homer to center, instantly putting the Longhorns in a 3-0 hole.
In a WCWS setting, that kind of swing doesn’t just change the scoreboard. It changes the entire feel of the dugout.
Texas tried to steady itself, but the deficit grew in the fifth when Taelyn Holley scored from third on a wild pitch by Citlaly Gutierrez, pushing Tennessee’s lead to 4-0.
The Longhorns finally cracked through in the bottom half of the inning when Taylor Anderson scored after a fielder’s choice and an error.
But Texas needed more from that situation and couldn’t cash in enough traffic to truly flip the pressure.
Tennessee answered quickly. Gabby Leach singled home Zoie Shuler, stretching the lead back to 5-1 and forcing Texas to chase again.
Then Leighann Goode gave the Horns a jolt.
With two outs in the sixth, Goode blasted a two-run homer off Tennessee pitcher Karlyn Pickens, cutting the deficit to 5-3 and giving Texas a real pulse.
For a moment, it felt like the Longhorns might be ready to steal momentum.
But Tennessee added insurance in the seventh, and Texas couldn’t finish the comeback.
Now the Longhorns’ WCWS path gets nasty.
There’s no safety net left, no margin for another slow start and no room for missed opportunities.
Texas still has the talent to make noise, but after Tennessee’s opening punch, the Horns have to play clean, aggressive softball immediately.
Oklahoma City doesn’t forgive hesitation.
