Texas basketball is headed to the Sweet 16 vs. Purdue, and Sean Miller’s March track record has the Longhorns dreaming bigger than anyone expected.

Texas basketball is still dancing, and the Longhorns’ surprising NCAA Tournament run has suddenly created a real path to something even bigger.

After surviving the First Four, knocking off major opponents and reaching the Sweet 16, Texas now faces Purdue with a chance to keep one of the most unlikely March runs in program history alive.

That’s what makes this moment so compelling for Sean Miller and the Longhorns.

Texas didn’t enter the NCAA Tournament looking like a team built for a deep run, but experience, timely shot-making and strong coaching have changed the conversation.

Now, Texas basketball fans are talking seriously about a Sweet 16 matchup with Purdue and what it could mean for a possible Final Four push.

The Longhorns got here by leaning on veterans who’ve been through March before.

Tre Johnson may bring star power, but the poise of Tramon Mark and Cam Heide showed up in winning time against Gonzaga. Mark made the right read late, Heide knocked down the huge shot, and Miller once again showed why his postseason resume deserves respect.

The Texas coach has now built a reputation for getting teams through the first weekend, and this run only adds to it.

The challenge gets tougher now. Purdue brings one of the nation’s most efficient offenses into the matchup, led by standout point guard Braden Smith and a group that can shoot, pass and punish mistakes.

The Boilermakers are a serious test, especially with Trey Kaufman-Renn creating problems inside and Fletcher Loyer stretching defenses on the perimeter.

Still, Texas has reasons to believe. Purdue isn’t known for dominant defense, and that could open the door for Mark, Jordan Pope and Dailyn Swain to attack favorable matchups.

If Texas rebounds, gets to the foul line and hits enough 3s, this game could be tighter than expected.

For a team that looked finished just weeks ago, that’s an incredible place to be.

Texas and Purdue tip off inside the SAP Center in San Jose, California, on Thursday at 6:10 p.m. CT on CBS.
