Texas wide receiver Cam Coleman is already making noise in spring practice, and one viral catch showed exactly why Steve Sarkisian made him a portal priority.
Texas wide receiver Cam Coleman is already becoming one of the biggest storylines of Longhorns spring football, and a viral catch this week only added more fuel.
The former Auburn standout arrived in Austin as one of the crown jewels of Texas’ No. 1-ranked transfer portal class, and he’s wasting no time showing why.

Coleman brings proven production to Steve Sarkisian’s offense. Across two seasons at Auburn, he totaled 97 catches for 1,306 yards and 13 touchdowns, building a reputation as one of college football’s most dangerous contested-catch receivers.
That skill set is exactly why Texas targeted him so aggressively once he hit the portal.
Sarkisian didn’t hide how highly the staff thought of Coleman during the recruiting process.
“When he went into the portal, it was like ‘ok, this is probably going to be a priority for a lot of teams in the country.’”
The Texas coach said the attraction went far beyond talent.
“The biggest thing that came out of it for me is what an awesome individual this is, an awesome kid. He hasn’t disappointed since he’s arrived.”
That early impression is already showing up on the field. During Wednesday’s spring practice, Coleman went up over freshman defensive back Samari Matthews and ripped down a highlight-reel grab that quickly started making the rounds online.
It was the kind of play that turns a routine spring session into a statewide conversation.
For Texas, Coleman’s presence could be a major piece of the 2026 offense. His size, leaping ability and ability to win on the outside give the Longhorns a true No. 1 target and a legitimate red-zone weapon.
Sarkisian believes Coleman came to Austin with a clear purpose.
“He came here with real intentions and a real reason of understanding that he wants to compete for a National Championship and he wants to put himself in the best position to get ready for the NFL. He came to a pro-style offense for a reason.”
That reason is already looking pretty obvious.
