The Longhorns needed a comeback effort, but they got the job done in a midweek game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Texas Longhorns were staring down a 5-0 deficit before they grabbed the bats for the first time, but thanks to a season-best comeback effort, the nation's No. 4 team avoided a crushing upset to beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 14-7 in Austin on Tuesday.
The Islanders plated five runs in the top of the first inning off Texas' starting pitcher Michael Winter with a trio of run-scoring singles.
The Horns answered with a run in the first and another answer in the third. Trailing 6-2, Texas entered the pivotal middle innings and came alive offensively to mount their largest come-from-behind win of the season off of 13 unanswered runs.
Catcher Carson Tinney led the charge with three hits and a career-high five runs batted in. Each of his base knocks drove in runs during the comeback.
The pitching also calmed down for Texas as seven players saw time on the mound, and the bullpen limited the damage once the offense picked things up. Leading the way was right-hander Hudson Hamilton, who improved to 2-0 on the season after pitching 3.1 scoreless innings and striking out a career-high four batters.
Texas improved to 28-7 on the season while Corpus Christi fell to 16-20.
Longhorns head coach Jim Schlossnagle spoke postgame about how the team's outfield defense has continued to be a "sore spot," but he was proud of the effort shown at the bottom of the batting order.
Players 5-9 in the order each recorded a hit, with four of them registering multiple hits in the game. Texas also stole seven bases, which is the most since they swiped eight in a game in 2015.
"I thought that we showed up ready to play today," Tinney said. "Baseball happens, big innings happen against us and for us, but I'm really happy with the way we responded after the weekend and just came about our business, and playing the game to our standard."
After a series lost in College Station last weekend, Texas now sits tied with Texas A&M for second in the SEC standings. The Longhorns stay home this coming weekend with a three-game set against Alabama.
