Texas catcher Carson Tinney landed on the Buster Posey Award midseason watch list after hitting .284 with seven home runs and helping lead the Longhorns’ elite staff.
Texas catcher Carson Tinney is quickly turning a strong first season in Austin into one of the best stories on the Longhorns’ roster.
On Wednesday, Tinney picked up a major national honor when he was named to the midseason watch list for the 2026 Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award, another sign that his impact has been felt on both sides of the ball.
Through 29 games for Texas baseball, Tinney has delivered steady production at the plate while helping anchor one of the nation’s top pitching staffs.
The Longhorns' backstop is batting .284 with seven home runs, four doubles and 21 RBIs, giving Texas needed offense from a premium defensive position.
His ability to produce in key moments has added another layer to a lineup that’s already built to make a deep postseason run.
What’s made Tinney especially valuable is that his influence goes far beyond the batter’s box. Behind the plate, he’s been a critical part of a Texas pitching staff that ranks among the top 10 nationally in both ERA and WHIP.
With Tinney handling the staff, pitchers such as Dylan Volantis, Sam Cozart and Ruger Riojas have all turned in standout stretches this season, with multiple arms earning weekly honors along the way.
That complete body of work is a big reason Texas has spent much of the 2026 season viewed as a legitimate College World Series contender.
The Longhorns have become one of the more complete teams in college baseball, and Tinney’s consistency has helped stabilize both the pitching plan and the middle of the order.
The award watch list also continues a recent trend for Texas baseball.
Last season, Rylan Galvan reached finalist status, giving the program back-to-back years with a catcher in the national spotlight. If Tinney keeps producing at this pace, he could push his way even higher before the season is done.
