Texas faces Mississippi State without injured quarterback Kamario Taylor, giving Will Muschamp's defense an opportunity to pressure an inexperienced replacement.

The Texas Longhorns are preparing for Saturday's SEC matchup against Mississippi State knowing they'll face a dramatically different offense than the one that opened the season with four consecutive victories.

And that could create a significant opportunity for defensive coordinator Will Muschamp.

Mississippi State quarterback Kamario Taylor, one of the SEC's most productive offensive players, is out for the remainder of the 2026 season after undergoing surgery for a foot injury.

The sophomore had been playing through the injury since September, but aggravated it during Saturday's 23-15 loss to Oklahoma.

Now, the Bulldogs must turn to redshirt freshman Parker "Billy" Puckett when they visit No. 11 Texas at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

For the Longhorns, the change could fundamentally alter Saturday's defensive game plan.

Taylor had thrown for 1,460 yards and 17 touchdowns while completing 65.4 percent of his passes through six appearances.

He also threw just four interceptions, establishing himself as one of the SEC's most dangerous young quarterbacks.

Mississippi State started 4-0 behind Taylor before losing three consecutive games as injuries disrupted its offense.

Puckett inherits a difficult assignment against a Texas defense allowing just 285.4 total yards and 19.1 points per game.

The young quarterback has thrown for 368 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions this season, and Saturday's matchup represents an enormous step up in responsibility.

That's where Muschamp could find an advantage.

Texas has the personnel to disguise coverages, change defensive looks before the snap and challenge Puckett to make quick decisions under pressure.

Senior linebacker Rasheem Biles should play an important role.

The Butkus Award semifinalist leads the Longhorns with three interceptions and seven quarterback hurries while ranking second on the team with 53 tackles.

Biles also delivered a critical goal-line interception in last week's 34-27 victory over Ole Miss, helping Texas secure one of its biggest wins of the season.

The Longhorns could also benefit from forcing Mississippi State into obvious passing situations.

However, overlooking the Bulldogs' running game would be a mistake.

Running back Fluff Bothwell has rushed for 514 yards and three touchdowns this season, giving head coach Jeff Lebby an established offensive weapon capable of taking pressure off Puckett.

Texas must also account for its own injury concerns. Star edge rusher Colin Simmons, who has recorded 10.5 sacks, remains doubtful with an ankle injury.

Still, Mississippi State's quarterback change gives the Longhorns a clear opportunity to dictate how Saturday's game unfolds.

With Texas fighting to remain in the College Football Playoff picture, defensive consistency will be critical.

The Longhorns don't need to overwhelm an inexperienced quarterback with complicated schemes on every snap.

They need to stop the run, create difficult third downs and force Puckett to beat them through the air.

For Muschamp's defense, the opportunity is there. Now Texas has to take advantage of it.

Saturday's kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPN.
