Texas baseball slipped in the latest coaches poll after a rivalry series loss at Texas A&M, with rain wiping out the Longhorns’ final shot at a rebound.

The Texas Longhorns baseball team took a hit in the newest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll after a bruising weekend series against Texas A&M in College Station.

What began as a high-profile rivalry matchup ended with Texas leaving town frustrated, rain-soaked and searching for a response after dropping two games and never getting the chance to play the finale.

For Jim Schlossnagle, the trip carried extra attention. It marked his return to face the Aggies on their home field after making the move from College Station to Austin, and the atmosphere reflected every bit of that tension.

Instead of a statement weekend for Texas, the series turned into one of the tougher stretches of the season.

Friday’s opener slipped away late. Texas got a shaky outing from starter Rugar Riojas, and the bullpen couldn’t stop the damage as Texas A&M surged ahead in the ninth inning to steal the win. Saturday was even more lopsided.

After a weather stoppage of 1 hour, 38 minutes in the first inning, the Aggies broke the game open by sending wave after wave of hitters to the plate and hanging an eight-run inning on the Longhorns.

Sunday offered at least the possibility of a reset, but the weather never cooperated.

The series finale, originally scheduled for 1 p.m. CT, was pushed back again and again as rain rolled through Central Texas. Officials and both teams waited throughout the day in hopes of getting the game underway, and at one point, a 9:30 p.m. CT first pitch was on the table.

More rain finally ended that plan, and the game was canceled.

Now, Texas turns the page quickly. The Longhorns return home to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, then welcome Alabama to Austin for a key weekend series.

After a rivalry trip that delivered drama, disappointment and a drop in the rankings, Texas needs a fast rebound.
