Texas basketball has added another important piece for Sean Miller, landing Tennessee transfer Amari Evans out of the NCAA Transfer Portal.
The Texas Longhorns are bringing in a 6-foot-5, 220-pound guard with SEC experience, defensive toughness and long-term upside, giving Miller another versatile option as he reshapes the roster for the 2026-27 season.
Evans arrives in Austin with an intriguing profile.
The former Tennessee freshman has a reported 6-10 wingspan, three years of eligibility remaining and the kind of athletic build that should translate quickly in the SEC.
Before college, he was a four-star recruit from Overtime Elite in Atlanta and ranked No. 70 nationally in the 247Sports Composite, so the talent has been obvious for a while.
What stands out most is the two-way potential. Evans earned minutes at Tennessee because of his defense, not just his recruiting pedigree.
He finished third on the Vols with 34 steals and regularly drew assignments against the other team’s top perimeter scorer. That kind of defensive trust as a freshman usually says a lot.
Offensively, there’s room to grow, but there were flashes that suggest Evans could become much more than a role player. His best outing came in Tennessee’s regular-season finale against Vanderbilt, when he poured in a career-high 24 points and showed the confidence to carry a bigger scoring load.
Texas also got a first-hand look at him in Knoxville on January 6, when he logged 23 minutes against the Longhorns and scored four points in Tennessee’s win.
For Sean Miller, this move feels like more than just adding depth. Evans gives Texas a young, physical guard who can defend wings, create disruption and develop into a bigger offensive piece over time. In a roster build that needs toughness and upside, Amari Evans checks both boxes.
