There's a new crystal ball prediction that lands John Meredith III in Austin.
The Texas Longhorns produced two NFL draftees in this year's class out of the defensive backs room: veterans Malik Muhammad and Michael Taaffe.
Muhammad, a former high school star who started much of his career with the Horns, was picked by the Chicago Bears in the fourth round. Taaffe was a former walk-on who worked his way up to being a multiple-time captain and now, a seventh-round pick of the Miami Dolphins.
The trend could continue in years to come with returners Gracecon Littleton and Kade Phillips showing NFL-level potential early in their Texas careers for Steve Sarkisian's defense.
And with major news coming through the recruiting grapevine, Sark could be getting a boost in the 2027 secondary.
Rivals analyst Steve Wiltfong has predicted Texas to land elite cornerback prospect John Meredith III out of Fort Worth.
Meredith is a consensus 5-star prospect on most recruiting outlets. The 6-2, 175-pounder is ranked as the No. 1 cornerback and No. 5 overall player in the 2027 high school class. 247Sports has him ranked as the No. 2 overall prospect in the country among incoming seniors.
With his senior season at North Crowley on the horizon, this will be a busy summer for Meredith.
In October of 2025, he cut his list of potential college destinations down to 11, with in-state programs such as Texas, Texas A&M, SMU and Texas Tech all included.
Meredith will reportedly be visiting Sarkisian and the Longhorns in Austin on June 5. He will also be tripping to Alabama on May 29, Texas A&M on June 12, and Ohio State on June 19.
This upcoming visit to the Forty Acres will be Meredith's his first official visit with the Longhorns. He has previously been on campus twice in April for unofficial visits.
While some outlets are proposing that Meredith could announce his decision as early as this month, we imagine he'll want to travel the on-campus recruiting trail first this summer before making his much-anticipated decision.
Meredith was named a MaxPreps All-American as a junior at Euless Trinity before enrolling at North Crowley, the 2024 UIL 6A Division I state champs, for his 2027 season.
Texas currently has 10 commitments in the 2027 cycle - four 4-stars and six 3-stars - placing the Horns 14th in 247Sports' recruiting rankings.
The Longhorns' top commitment thus far in the next class is Easton Royal from New Orleans, a wide receiver prospect who is ranked as a 5-star on some platforms.
Meredith's commitment would land the Longhorns one of the most coveted prospects not just in the state, but the entire country, and build on what could be a national championship-contending roster as soon as this season.
