Sean Miller eyes a historic backcourt pairing as the nation’s top point guard heads to Austin, sparking a high-stakes recruiting battle against SEC rival John Calipari.
Since March, there may not be a college basketball head coach who has laid a better foundation for future success than Sean Miller.
Miller followed up his Texas Longhorns' surprising run to the Sweet 16 with the fourth-best transfer class in the nation ... and then convinced 2027 No. 1 recruit Marcus Spears Jr. to reclassify and join him in Austin a year early.
That alone is impressive — but it isn't keeping Miller from continuing to focus beyond the upcoming season.
Per Brandon Jenkins of 247Sports, the new top prospect in the 2027 class, Beckham Black, has scheduled a visit to the Longhorns in the fall.
Black, the younger brother of Orlando Magic guard Anthony Black, already holds offers from Texas, Georgetown, Arkansas, Auburn and California.
The Orlando native is described as a "pure point guard" who "sees the game at a high level" according to NBADraftroom.com, which would be scary for Miller if the scouting report holds true ... and Black commits to the Longhorns, of course.
Due to his age, barring a transfer for a larger NIL deal, Spears will play his sophomore season in Austin — which will coincide with Black's first collegiate campaign.
That hypothetical pairing would produce one of the most lethal pick-and-roll combinations in the country, let alone the SEC.
But that script could flip on Texas quite quickly if they don't secure a commitment from Black when he visits in a few months.
He doesn't have an official meeting set yet, but the Arkansas offer is troubling.
Given John Calipari's track record with developing freshman guards into NBA lottery picks, the Razorbacks could ultimately appear more attractive to the nation's top recruit.
And while Miller quietly has a great track record in the pros himself, few coaches in the history of college hoops have rivaled Calipari's ability to get his guys to succeed at the next level.
NIL will certainly end up playing a factor, but Miller must ensure that his pitch trumps the prospect of becoming the next Darius Acuff Jr., John Wall, Devin Booker or Derrick Rose.
Fortunately, Spears' decision should play a factor, as his commitment helped shed new light on Texas' men's basketball program as a whole — but that doesn't eliminate the importance of Miller getting Black to sign the day he arrives in Austin.
