Texas has joined the chase for four-star 2028 linebacker Nehemiah McCary, one of Alabama’s top recruits and a rising national target.
Texas football recruiting is already moving aggressively in the 2028 class, and the Longhorns have now entered the race for one of the nation’s most intriguing young defenders.
Texas extended an offer Monday to Nehemiah McCary, a four-star linebacker from Maplesville High School in Alabama.
McCary is currently viewed as one of the top prospects in the 2028 recruiting cycle, with 247Sports ranking him No. 1 in Alabama and No. 27 nationally.
That kind of profile explains why the Longhorns are getting involved early. McCary’s offer list has already become a who’s-who of major college football brands, including Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Miami and Ohio State.
With more than a year before the 2028 season even begins, his recruitment is only expected to get more crowded.
What makes McCary so appealing is his versatility. While he projects best at linebacker, he’s also been a major weapon on offense.
During the 2024 season, he rushed for 1,092 yards on 179 carries, showing power, balance and open-field ability. He also caught 11 passes for 80 yards, giving Maplesville another way to get the ball in his hands.
Defensively, McCary added 26 tackles and one interception, flashing the instincts and athleticism that have made scouts believe his long-term home is on that side of the ball.

For Texas, this offer fits the bigger picture. The Longhorns are trying to stack elite defensive talent as they continue building a roster capable of competing for national championships year after year.
McCary is still early in the process, and his recruitment won’t slow down anytime soon. But Texas has made one thing clear ... the Longhorns want to be firmly in the mix.
