The Texas Longhorns (7-2) have an opportunity to get revenge against the Georgia Bulldogs (7-2) for twice losing to Georgia last season. Albeit Texas players don't see it that way. At least, that's what they are saying publicly.
Longhorns players were asked about the opportunity to avenge the losses. Texas edge Ethan Burke provided a different perpective.
"No, last year is in the past," Burke shared. "This is two completely new teams."
There will be two different teams lining up opposite each other on Saturday than were on the field in Atlanta in the 2024 SEC Championship game. That much is true.
Both the Longhorns and Bulldogs sent several players to the NFL last season. Neither team has the same starting quarterback or many of the key skill players that led either team to a College Football Playoff berth in 2025. Yet while Texas players are saying all the right things it's difficult to ignore last season's results.
The Longhorns got embarrassed in the first game in Austin. Then ranked No. 1, Texas got demolished for the world to see. And it wasn't for lack of defensive playmaking.
While the Longhorns allowed 23 first half points, much of the damage was done by the Texas offense. Missed opportunities and poor quarterback play hurt Texas last year. It was bad enough it saw Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers get benched.
Ewers would bounce back over the course of the season, but his Georgia benching was justifiable. Texas' offense managed to score 15 points despite being handed three interceptions by its own defense.
The second game was more frustrating in that Texas outplayed Georgia and still lost. The Longhorns dominated the first half with several explosive plays yet only led 6-3 at halftime.
Both Matthew Golden and DeAndre Moore would go for over 100 receiving yards, and the Longhorns could only muster 19 points in regulation before losing in overtime, 22-19.
Texas might not say it is seeking revenge. Perhaps it doesn't think it seeks revenge either. Still, it's hard to lose games like the Longhorns did in either extreme and not remember what happened.
Despite the past, the Longhorns have an opportunity to erase any loss from last season. They have the chance to end a four-game combined losing streak against college football's top dogs of the post-Alabama head coach Nick Saban era of college football. Texas has lost four-straight in games against Georgia and Ohio State.
Texas will look to secure its first win over Georgia since 2019 on Saturday.
