This spring is Steve Sarkisian's sixth offseason as head coach of the Texas Longhorns.
In half of those seasons, he's convinced the No. 1-rated wide receiver in the transfer portal to make the move to Austin.
The signing of Auburn star Cam Coleman this week propels Texas up the recruiting rankings during this cycle. It's also been a boost in preseason odds for quarterback Arch Manning and his Heisman Trophy candidacy in Year 2 as a full-time starter.
Back in 2022, Texas looked to rebound from an 8-5 season and Alamo Bowl loss to Washington by stacking up the weapons for quarterback Quinn Ewers. That ended with the best available receiver Adonai Mitchell moving to the Forty Acres after two national championship-winning seasons at Georgia.
Mitchell posted career-highs in receptions, yards and touchdowns as his junior year set him up to be a second-round pick in the NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts. His winning pedigree in college also helped the Longhorns' success that season, going 12-5 with a berth in the postseason bracket for the first time.
Sarkisian then re-loaded that College Football Playoff roster with speedy wideout Isaiah Bond, the top-ranked receiver transferring out of Alabama. Bond would ultimately lose his WR1 spot late in the season to Matthew Golden, but both played well enough to move onto the professional ranks after another CFP Semifinals appearance.
Now comes Coleman, whose 1,300 yards over the last two seasons are plenty enough to reload what Texas lost this offseason on the outside.
Starters Parker Livingstone and Deandre Moore, along with youngsters Aaron Butler and Jaime Ffrench transferred out, paving the way for a fierce duo with Coleman and Ryan Wingo.
For Manning, it's a jackpot landing as he now has two downfield threats - Wingo's blazing speed and Coleman's 6-3 frame that skies over defensive backs.
Wingo has also recorded over 1,300 yards receiving with nine touchdowns in two years at Texas. He and Coleman should have favorable matchups if the Longhorns ground game can be as fruitful as its potential suggests after this portal cycle, too.
With a one-two punch of Hollywood Smothers and Raleek Brown in the backfield, teams will have to play Sarkisian's offense honestly, because a single lean one direction can get Manning pulling a run-pass option and launching a deep ball downfield to one of his favorite targets.
As a whole, Texas' offense lagged at times this season, but with an elite transfer portal class incoming and a year of experience under Manning's belt, the Longhorns are built to contend.
And it all starts with the formula Sark's coaching staff favors to reload through the portal.
