Longhorns Take 1-0 Lead with Powerful First Inning

Mihyia Davis became the ninth Red Raider to hit at least 10 home runs this season when her solo shot put up the first tally of the game, but Texas answered the power with some of their own.

Katie Stewart crushed her 31st homer of the year to push the Longhorns ahead 2-1. The blast rattled Texas Tech's defense, as two tough plays in the field allowed three more runs to score. Texas led 5-1 after a first inning filled with fireworks.

Stewart became the first player in WCWS history to homer in four consecutive games.

Texas Tech went to lefty Samantha Lincoln to pitch in the bottom of the third, which burned Canady after her appearance in relief. Head coach Gerry Glasco decided to not only save Canady's arm, but to limit the number of opportunities Texas could possibly get comfortable facing her.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Lincoln intentionally walked Stewart to get to Viviana Martinez, who singled in the infield. Jaycie Nichols sped around third and scored as the Red Raiders couldn't relay her at home after Martinez was safe at first.

Leading 6-1, Kavan continued to shove. Davis' homer in the second at-bat of the game represented the only Texas Tech hit through the first 4.2 innings ... but then Mia Williams stepped up and smoked a two-run homer to centerfield, trimming Tech's deficit to 6-3.

The Red Raiders tried to build another rally with Jackie Lis hitting a long single off the wall with one out in the sixth, but two infield groundouts eliminated the threat. Texas Tech dropped to 1-10 in at-bats with runners on base in the game (Williams' home run being the lone hit).

Terry was brought back in as the Horns loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning. Martinez hit a sac fly to push the Texas lead to 7-3.

Kavan completed the three-hitter - her 10th win of her WCWS career - with a strikeout, pop-out, and lineout.
