The New York Jets used the No. 2 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft on Texas Tech star David Bailey, adding a major edge-rush weapon.

The New York Jets needed a pass rusher, and they didn’t overthink it.

New York selected Texas Tech edge rusher David Bailey with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, giving the Jets one of the most explosive defensive prospects in the class.

Bailey became the highest-drafted Texas Tech player since Donny Anderson went to the Houston Oilers in 1965, making this a historic night for the Red Raiders program.

For the Jets, the pick is all about fixing one of the NFL’s biggest defensive problems. New York finished last in the league in sacks last season and ranked second-worst in pressure rate.

That made edge rusher one of the clearest needs on the roster, and Bailey brings the kind of production that’s hard to ignore.

Bailey was dominant in his final season at Texas Tech, leading the country with 14.5 sacks and 19.5 tackles for loss. He also earned consensus All-American honors while helping the Red Raiders reach the College Football Playoff.

That type of résumé made Bailey a natural fit near the top of the draft, even if the Jets had other options.

New York also considered Ohio State defender Arvell Reese, whose versatility as an edge rusher and off-ball linebacker made him one of the most complete defensive prospects available.

Still, the Jets ultimately prioritized pure pass-rush ability. Bailey was the most productive sack artist in college football, and New York badly needed someone who could immediately threaten quarterbacks off the edge.

There are fair questions about Bailey’s run defense and whether he’ll need time to become a more complete NFL defender.

But the Jets didn’t draft him second overall to be safe. They drafted him to wreck passing games.

After months of debate, New York made its choice clear: Bailey is the centerpiece of its defensive rebuild.
