In the wake of several other controversial moves in college football, Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire expressed his disagreement with the treatment of Brendan Sorsby.
LUBBOCK -- Quarterback Brendan Sorsby may be out of the Texas Tech program, but head coach Joey McGuire has not forgotten the could-have-been Red Raider.
Nor is the leading man in Lubbock shifting in his stance of support for the passer presumed to suit up for his squad at the beginning of the offseason.
The scandal that ensued with Sorsby and Texas Tech needs no introduction, as it garnered headlines and dominated national talk for weeks on end.
But to quickly summarize the situation, Sorsby was the part of an investigation headed by the NCAA into possible gambling violations, which he later admitted to and cited a medically diagnosed addiction as the cause.
After being ruled ineligible, Sorsby won a temporary injunction from a Lubbock court and looked primed to play. However, that decision unleashed pure chaos across the sport and had several programs threaten to boycott the Red Raiders entirely.
The onslaught of negative attention finally culminated in the pair mutually separating and Sorsby is now in football limbo after not being able to make the leap to the NFL, CFL or other professional leagues.
And McGuire does not feel that this was a fair draw for the should-be senior quarterback.
In a recent appearance on Yahoo! Sports Daily, McGuire made his feelings about the treatment of Sorsby crystal clear.
"It's amazing that ... there are going to be people playing this year, they're going to be suspended for X amount of games and Brendan Sorsby is going to have to sit out," remarked McGuire candidly.
He also expressed his regret to allow Sorsby to leave the program and attempt to enter the NFL supplemental draft, which was eventually denied by the league and its commissioner, Roger Goodell.
"The one thing I would have done different, if I would have known the NFL, really the commissioner...were not going to allow Brendan Sorsby to be a part of the supplemental draft...I would have said 'Hey, let's not take this chance. I don't want that for you.'"
Regardless of McGuire's consistent feelings on the situation, it is obvious that many around college football, or the sport at all levels for that matter, do not share his sentiments.
However, that has never seemed to phase the coach in his stance on Sorsby, even if he has not and will never suit up for Texas Tech in an actual game.
While it was not part of what McGuire mentioned, his thoughts come after the recent influx of athletes returning to the college ranks from the NFL in an unprecedented move based upon the new eligibility requirements from the NCAA, with LSU being a main proponent of these moves.
It is yet to be seen if they will garner the same amount of backlash that Texas Tech and Sorsby received.
It is truly the wild west in college athletics and unfortunately for Brendan Sorsby, his case was a rare form of near universal agreement in college football and unlike many other controversial figures, it cost him a chance to cap off a solid career.
