Joey McGuire says Texas Tech is where he wants to stay after a historic 2025 season, a playoff run and a new contract that cements his long-term future.

Joey McGuire isn’t treating Texas Tech like a stepping-stone job, and that’s become one of the biggest reasons the Red Raiders enter 2026 with so much momentum.

Texas Tech football is coming off the best season in program history, and McGuire’s message has been clear ... he’s not looking around.

After leading the Red Raiders to an 11-1 regular season, a Big 12 title and the program’s first College Football Playoff appearance, McGuire has made it known that Lubbock is exactly where he wants to be.

That kind of clarity matters in modern college football, where coaching rumors never really stop.

McGuire, 54, has now compiled a 35-18 record through four seasons at Texas Tech, and the results have matched the energy he brought when he first arrived in 2022.

The Red Raiders have reached a bowl game in each of his first three years, putting him in rare company in school history. He also delivered bowl wins in each of his first two seasons, another sign that the program wasn’t just improving, but learning how to finish.

Then came the breakthrough.

Texas Tech didn’t simply have a good 2025 season. The Red Raiders kicked the door down. They earned the No. 4 seed in the College Football Playoff, dominated the regular season with every win coming by at least 20 points, and then captured the Big 12 championship.

That run changed the conversation around the program nationally.

It also strengthened the bond between McGuire and Texas Tech.

The school rewarded him with a seven-year extension in December, a move that signaled long-term belief from athletic director Kirby Hocutt and the administration.

McGuire has answered that commitment by publicly shutting down the idea of chasing another job.

For Texas Tech fans, that may be as important as any single win.

The Red Raiders believe they’ve found a coach who can build something lasting, and McGuire sounds like someone who believes the same thing.
