The No. 1-ranked prospect in the 2027 class is a long-time Texas Tech pledge, but that hasn't stopped others from pitching why he should flip.
LUBBOCK, Texas - Jalen Brewster, the consensus 5-star defensive lineman prospect and top-ranked recruit in the 2027 class, remains verbally committed to the Texas Tech Red Raiders as its surge up the college football mountain continues.
The Cedar Hill product has a clear DFW tie to Tech's Joey McGuire, who turned Cedar Hill into a juggernaut before moving into the college ranks. That could be why Brewster pledged to the Red Raiders back in October of 2025.
But as his recruitment intensifies ahead of his senior season, some believe he'll be a flip candidate.
Brewster spent the last few weeks taking official visits to top programs across the country, including SEC powers Texas, LSU and Florida. On3 tracks that he's also visited nearby SMU, Oklahoma and Oregon. The site claims he's been in Lubbock just twice.
The 6-3, 300-pounder has been active on social media throughout the process, often posting photos from the official visits and interacting with fan accounts for various schools.
But when does he have to make his final decision? Brewster still has a few months where he could flip and sign during the early signing period. He could also pen his national letter of intent with Texas Tech, as well, or hold off on anything official until February.
There are reports, however, that suggest Brewster may already have some type of on-paper commitment with the Red Raiders.
The folks at TigerBait.com covering LSU believe there must be some "buy-out" agreed upon between the two schools in pursuit of Brewster. Other sites have been quoted saying Brewster and Texas Tech could "part ways" as he recruitment heats up.
Then there's another interesting wrinkle. On the Lubbock Central Appraisal District, there has been a property purchased in Lubbock under the name "J Brewster Living Trust."
It appears the purchase was completed in February, with Brewster's father, former Dallas Cowboys third-round draft pick Robert Brewster, and Jalen's agent Derrick Shelby listed on the paperwork.
Prestige Management Group represents Brewster, and while high school student-athletes can earn name, image, and likeness deals, there remains an uncertainty around Brewster's plans.
"Theyâre building a special team that can be legendary and a team that can build their own legacy and not somewhere youâre already part of a legacy," Brewster said about Texas Tech on his last visit.
The Red Raiders are hoping the top recruit is simply doing his due diligence in the process, scoping out each option to make sure he's firm in his commitment.
He'll have a home in Lubbock waiting for him if that's the case and he stays firm on the Red Raiders.
