Texas Tech baseball kept its red-hot offense rolling Tuesday, but this time the biggest story started on the mound.
Freshman Adam Hayes gave the Red Raiders exactly what they needed in a 12-2 run-rule win over New Mexico, turning in five scoreless innings to help Texas Tech baseball improve to 16-8 on the season.
Hayes was making his first home start, and the young right-hander looked comfortable almost immediately. He retired the first eight hitters he faced and never let New Mexico find much rhythm.
When the Lobos finally threatened in the third inning, Hayes worked through it and kept the shutout intact. By the time his afternoon ended, he had allowed only four hits, many of them weak contact, and earned the first win of his college career.
Texas Tech’s offense made sure he had breathing room early.
The Red Raiders erupted for six runs in the opening frame, doing most of the damage with two outs.
A string of clutch hits, combined with a costly New Mexico throwing mistake, quickly put the game in control. From there, Texas Tech kept pressure on the Lobos and finished things with a four-run eighth inning to trigger the run rule.
It was another reminder of just how dangerous this lineup has become at Rip Griffin Park.
All nine Texas Tech starters scored at least once, and the Red Raiders are now 13-3 at home. They’ve already passed last season’s home win total and have scored 196 runs in their first 16 home games, a massive jump from the 189 they scored at home across all of last year.
The bullpen backed Hayes in dominant fashion, as Logan Addison, Jonny Lowe, and Jacob Rogers combined for three perfect innings, slamming the door after Hayes exited. Addison’s work was especially important, escaping inherited trouble with an all-strike appearance that shifted the game fully back in Texas Tech’s favor.
Now the focus shifts to a road trip at TCU. But before that showdown, the Red Raiders got exactly what they wanted: a breakout start from Adam Hayes and another loud offensive statement.
