Texas Tech loaded up through the transfer portal, but Brendan Sorsby’s uncertain status has added real drama to the Red Raiders’ 2026 outlook.

Texas Tech football enters 2026 with Big 12 title expectations, a loaded transfer class and one very complicated quarterback question.

The Red Raiders are coming off a breakthrough season under Joey McGuire, and the offseason plan was aggressive: reload the roster, keep key pieces and make another run at the top of the Big 12. For the most part, Texas Tech did exactly that.

The headliner was quarterback Brendan Sorsby, a high-profile transfer from Cincinnati expected to take over the offense. But Sorsby’s future is now uncertain as he deals with an NCAA investigation tied to sports betting and seeks treatment for a gambling addiction.

That puts extra focus on Will Hammond, who is recovering from a torn ACL suffered last October.

Even with the quarterback situation unsettled, Texas Tech has a lot to like. The Red Raiders added major defensive help through the portal, including outside linebackers Trey White from San Diego State and Adam Trick from Miami (Ohio).

Kansas State linebacker Austin Romaine also joins the mix after earning All-Big 12 recognition.

McGuire’s staff also attacked the trenches, bringing in eight defensive linemen and edge rushers to help replace key departures like Jacob Rodriguez, David Bailey and Lee Hunter.

The offense wasn’t ignored either. Texas Tech added multiple transfer wide receivers after losing NFL-caliber production, while former five-star receiver Micah Hudson could be ready for a major jump.

Just as important, the Red Raiders kept several important players in Lubbock, including tight end Terrance Carter Jr., cornerback Brice Pollock and tackle Howard Sampson.

Coordinators Mack Leftwich and Shiel Wood are also back, giving Texas Tech valuable continuity.

The Sorsby situation is the cloud over everything. But if Texas Tech gets solid quarterback play, this roster still looks built to contend.
