Texas Tech basketball just added another guard to the 2026 class, and Amari Barrett gives Grant McCasland one more piece in a backcourt rebuild that’s starting to get interesting.
Barrett, a shooting guard from Oklahoma City, announced his commitment to the Red Raiders on Sunday after previously being pledged to Ball State.
He reopened his recruitment in April, and Texas Tech didn’t waste the opportunity to jump in and land a player with a winning background.
Barrett helped power Millwood High School to a 27-2 record as a senior while playing a major role in back-to-back state championships.
He may not carry five-star hype, but he brings production, confidence and a championship edge into a Texas Tech program that’s trying to keep climbing in the Big 12.
The 247Sports composite ranks Barrett as the No. 278 overall player in the 2026 class, the No. 48 shooting guard in the country and the No. 4 prospect in Oklahoma.
That makes him a strong regional grab for McCasland, especially for a class that already has a premium headliner.
Barrett becomes Texas Tech’s second commitment in the cycle, joining five-star combo guard DaKari Spear.
That pairing gives the Red Raiders two guard prospects with different profiles, and it’s clear McCasland wants more scoring punch, more ball-handling and more lineup flexibility moving forward.
Texas Tech’s 2026 class currently sits ninth in the Big 12, according to 247Sports, but the bigger picture is the aggressive roster construction happening around it.
The Red Raiders have also hit the transfer portal hard, adding four-star combo guard Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn from UNLV, four-star point guard Cruz Davis from Hofstra and three-star combo guard Damarion Dennis from Wyoming.
McCasland is stacking creators, competitors and shot-makers. Barrett may not be the flashiest name in the class, but he fits the plan.
Texas Tech wants a backcourt with bite, and Barrett gives the Red Raiders another player who’s already proven he knows how to win.
