"We found a way to win," head coach Joey McGuire said after the Houston victory, and that has increasingly become the identity of his program.
Texas Tech is now 24-5 at home under McGuire, including a 9-1 record against nonconference opponents. An 11th consecutive home victory would match winning streaks produced by the 1973-74 and 2004-06 Red Raiders.
The defense also showed signs of becoming more dangerous last week.
Outside linebackers Adam Trick and Trey White both recorded sacks against Houston, while Trick forced a fumble that produced Texas Tech's only takeaway.
White's return was especially notable after he entered the season with 20.5 career sacks and 32 tackles for loss.
Sam Houston arrives at 1-2, and history hasn't been kind to the Bearkats in this matchup. Texas Tech is 2-0 all-time against Sam Houston, scoring 80 points in the 2005 meeting and winning 59-45 in 2015 behind Patrick Mahomes II's 425 passing yards and four touchdowns.
Saturday's game is already sold out as Texas Tech celebrates Parents Weekend, its Agriculture Game and Hall of Fame Weekend. The Red Raiders have also sold out their season-ticket allotment for the fourth straight year.
