As the Red Raiders men's and women's basketball teams continue their March runs, Texas Tech men’s golf is stepping into one of its toughest events of the spring, and the timing couldn’t be much better.
The Red Raiders head to the Valspar Collegiate Invitational in Palm City, Florida, carrying a No. 10 national ranking and a lineup built to challenge one of the deepest fields in college golf.
That’s what makes this week such a big measuring stick.
Texas Tech will tee it up at Floridian National Golf Club against a stacked 15-team field that includes No. 1 Auburn, No. 6 Texas, No. 7 Arkansas, No. 8 Arizona State, No. 13 Pepperdine, No. 14 Oklahoma, No. 17 North Carolina, No. 23 Duke and No. 24 USC.
This event has the feel of a postseason preview, and the Red Raiders have every reason to believe they belong in the middle of that conversation.
The strength of this Texas Tech team starts with elite individual talent.
Adam Bresnu enters the tournament ranked No. 7 nationally, Connor Graham sits No. 8, and Tim Wiedemeyer is No. 15 in the Clippd/Scoreboard rankings.
That trio has become the backbone of a program that continues to reload, not rebuild. Bresnu, Graham and Wiedemeyer were all named to both the Haskins Award Spring Watch List and the Ben Hogan Award Watch List, further proof that Texas Tech’s ceiling is built around top-end firepower.
Graham’s resume alone stands out. The Scotland native is coming off an offseason that included appearances in The Open Championship, the Arnold Palmer Cup and the Walker Cup.
Wiedemeyer and Ben Gregg also gained valuable experience in major amateur events, with both making the match play round at the U.S. Amateur.
Texas Tech’s lineup this week includes Graham, Bresnu, Wiedemeyer, Brady McHenry and Gregg.
McHenry led the Red Raiders in their last event, finishing tied for 22nd at 1-under, while Graham closed strong with a final-round 69.
This roster doesn’t feature a senior, which makes the upside even more intriguing. But the immediate goal is clear.
Texas Tech wants to sharpen its form, strengthen its postseason resume, and prove it can handle a field loaded with title contenders.
