Joey McGuire and the Texas Tech Red Raiders have secured the pledge of another offensive weapon for new quarterback Brendan Sorsby to throw to.
On Monday, former Auburn receiver Malcolm Simmons committed to the Red Raiders. Simmons was ranked among the top receivers in the transfer portal, along with Cam Coleman and Isaiah Horton.
Red Raiders receivers Reggie Virgil and Caleb Douglas have exhausted their eligibility and are bound for the Senior Bowl, but Texas Tech does retain Coy Eakin and Terrance Carter Jr., who combined for 103 catches and 1,200 receiving yards last season.
Simmons now provides McGuire and Sorsby a talented receiver option.
Simmons, 6-0, 186 pounds, was third on the Auburn team with 25 catches for 457 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for a score.
Over the final two games against Mercer and Alabama, Simmons posted eight catches for 292 yards and two touchdowns, a 38-yard per catch average over that stretch.
In two seasons at Auburn, Simmons posted 65 receptions for 908 yards and five touchdowns.
Simmons comes to a Texas Tech passing offense that ranked No. 17 in the FBS and averaged 278 yards per game. With Sorsby at quarterback next season, that ranking should be higher.
Sorsby, a Cincinnati transfer, passed for 2,800 yards, 27 touchdowns, five interceptions and completed 61.6 percent of his passes.
He rushed for 580 yards and nine more scores.
As the No. 1 QB prospect in the transfer portal, Sorsby received a $5 million payday to come and play for McGuire and the Red Raiders.
With Simmons’s pledge, Texas Tech now has a top ten portal class (No. 9), according to 247 Sports.
Some teams rebuild. Others simply reload. Simmons brings his skills to a Texas Tech team that is primed for another championship run next season.
