With a rare blend of physicality and playmaking, this Red Raider defender aims to silence draft doubters and make an immediate NFL impact.
Texas Tech fans had plenty of reason to pay attention during the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, as former Red Raider standout David Bailey heard his name called.
While the spotlight often gravitates toward quarterbacks and skill-position stars, Bailey’s selection served as a reminder of the high-level talent developing in Lubbock—and the impact those players can have at the next level.

In a recent article by Bleacher Report's Brent Sobleksi, he grades every pick from Day 1 of the draft. And with the second overall pick, he gives the New York Jets a B+ for taking the star Red Raiders defender.
Bailey entered the draft as one of the more intriguing prospects in his position group. Known for his physicality, motor, and ability to disrupt plays, he built his reputation at Texas Tech by consistently showing up in big moments. Whether it was applying pressure, setting the edge, or making key stops, his presence was felt throughout his college career.
He racked up 19.5 tackles for loss and 14.5 sacks, which was the most of any player in college football. He also showed his nose for the ball with three passes defended and three forced fumbles.
And a player that impacts the game in the way that Bailey does is something the Jets needed desperately.
The team finished second-to-last in the entire NFL in sacks this past season with just 26. For some context, the league leader was the Denver Broncos, who were able to bring down the opposing quarterback 68 times.
There’s also an argument that the grade itself may be a bit conservative. Players like Bailey, who bring a high floor along with positional flexibility, often outperform expectations once they enter the league. While he may not have been labeled the most explosive or high-upside prospect, his well-rounded game gives him a strong chance to carve out a meaningful role.
If his track record at Texas Tech is any indication, he has the tools and mindset to exceed those expectations.
For Red Raider fans, that’s the biggest takeaway. Regardless of where his grade landed, David Bailey is heading to the NFL with a chance to prove that his impact goes well beyond any early assessment.
