Texas Tech may not be clear of the Brendan Sorsby fallout yet, as Big 12 leaders weigh legal costs, possible sanctions and what comes next.
Texas Tech football may be done with Brendan Sorsby, but the Big 12 apparently isn’t done with Texas Tech.
What started as an explosive eligibility fight over the former Red Raiders quarterback has now turned into a lingering conference problem, and it could still cost Texas Tech even with Sorsby no longer in the picture.
According to reports, the Big 12 has not dropped its litigation tied to the situation, and league officials are expected to meet with member schools to sort through what happens next.
That’s where things get messy.
Sorsby, who left Texas Tech and is expected to enter the NFL supplemental draft, was ruled ineligible by the NCAA for the 2026 college football season after admitting he had previously gambled on games involving his own team.
A Texas judge later ruled that Sorsby could play, creating a full-blown storm across the sport.
Big 12 schools were furious. Some programs reportedly floated the possibility of refusing to play Texas Tech if Sorsby took the field.
The conference then moved legally to block him from playing, even as the case became bigger than one quarterback.
Now, with Sorsby moving on, the question is whether Texas Tech still faces consequences.
Legal fees are part of the debate. So is the precedent. Other Big 12 schools may not be eager to help cover costs from a fight they didn’t start, especially one involving player eligibility, gambling concerns and competitive balance.
For Texas Tech, the timing is brutal. The Red Raiders are coming off a College Football Playoff appearance in 2025 and have become one of the Big 12’s most dangerous programs. On the field, momentum is real.
Off the field, though, this Sorsby saga still has teeth.
Texas Tech may have lost the quarterback, but it hasn’t escaped the fallout.
