The Texas Tech Red Raiders were talented on the perimeter last season. The top two receivers presented big targets as both are 6-3 or taller, and they created mismatches against smaller defenders.
Reggie Virgil and Caleb Douglas were the primary weapons for a Red Raiders passing offense that ranked No. 3 in the Big 12 at 278 yards per game.
Texas Tech led the conference in passing yards with almost 3,900 yards on the season, and they were No. 2 in completion percentage at 65 percent.
Both players proved vital in the Red Raiders' run to a conference title last season.
Now, Douglas and Virgil will show the pros what they can do on a football field when they suit up next weekend at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama.
A transfer from Miami (OH), Virgil was No. 2 on the Red Raiders in receiving with 705 yards on 57 catches and six TDs. He also added two rushing scores, which demonstrates his versatility.
In the Big 12 championship game, Virgil posted a season-high 86 yards on eight catches in a 34-7 win over BYU. Virgil was named honorable mention Offensive Newcomer of the Year. For his collegiate career, Virgil has 100 catches for 1,583 yards and 16 receiving touchdowns.
A second-team All-Big 12 selection, Douglas led the Red Raiders with 54 catches for 846 yards and seven touchdowns. He posted a season-high 127 yards on five catches (25-yard average) in a 49-0 rout of West Virginia. Douglas’s career stat line reads like this: 135 catches, 2,031 yards and 16 touchdowns with Texas Tech and also Florida.
Virgil and Douglas are working hard to carry on the legacy of former Texas Tech receiver Michael Crabtree. Crabtree was a top ten pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, selected No. 10 overall by the 49ers. He was a unanimous All-American in consecutive seasons (2007-2008) and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2022.
Playing in the Senior Bowl is the opportunity of a lifetime for the best college players to solidify their chances at getting drafted. Being among the best of the best means having great practices, great interviews with NFL personnel and performing well in the game.
Virgil and Douglas are collecting helmet stickers as they prepare for the next step in their football journey to NFL stardom.
