The Red Raiders picked up a major summertime commitment from an intriguing defensive back prospect.
LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech Football hosted numerous recruits this weekend, as prospects toured the practice facility, Jones AT&T Stadium and interacted with Joey McGuire's staff in Lubbock.
And the Red Raiders landed a sought-after commitment by the time the visit was over.
Four-star athlete Gideon Gash out of Detroit (MI) Catholic Central pledged to Texas Tech. He is the No. 3-ranked athlete in the 2027 high school class and No. 73 overall, according to Rivals.
Texas Tech general manager James Blanchard spoke highly of the signing by saying he believes Gash is the "#1 cornerback prospect in the country. I'll stand on that. #TrueStory."
That praise is worthwhile when you look at Gash's measurements. He stands at 6-4, 206 pounds, and blazed a 4.35 40-yard dash on the laser. Those numbers recently helped him to All-Around MVP honors at the Polynesian Bowl combine.
"I just see they were a super dominant defense this past year," Gash said earlier this year, via On3. "They just put David Bailey in the NFL, so you can see they’re developing players to the next level.
"And they have a plan for me. I think they’ll start me a corner and move me depending on my size, so they have a plan. Great campus, great school. It was really sweet being down there. You can see the coaches’ love and everything."
According to his commitment post above, Gash chose the Red Raiders over several high-profile SEC programs like Alabama and LSU, as well as Big Ten schools closer to where he lives in Michigan State.
Gash is now the ninth Texas Tech commit with a recruit rating of 90 or more on Rivals' platform. He is Tech's seventh 4-star pledge in the class, joining the pair of 5-stars in No. 1 overall prospect DL Jalen Brewster and EDGE Anthony Sweeney.
The Red Raiders' have now risen to No. 4 in the national recruiting rankings for the 2027 high school cycle, sitting behind Texas A&M, Miami and Oklahoma. The next Big 12 school on Rivals' team rankings is Colorado down at No. 37.
