The second baseman has slugged all season long, and that's expected to continue in the NCAA tournament.
During the Big 12 tournament, Texas Tech second baseman Mia Williams set new single-season home run and runs batted in records. The Florida transfer and Big 12 Newcomer of the Year enters the NCAA bracket with 22 homers and 73 RBI on the year.
Williams, a Windermere, Florida native, went 3-for-5 at the plate with a pair of round-trippers in Tech's win over Baylor in the first game of the conference tournament. The Red Raiders fell in the tournament semifinals, but their 52-6 record was enough to earn hosting rights in the regional round of the big dance.
And as Texas Tech welcomes Marist, Boston U, and Ole Miss to Lubbock, Williams is on the precipice of even more history.
The senior infielder is two doubles away and four total bases shy of setting more single-season program records.
Williams powers a Texas Tech offense under head coach Gerry Glasco that leads the Big 12 this season in runs, runs batted in, home runs, and on base percentage in conference play.
Familiar Face Back in West Texas
If both teams were to win their opening games, Texas Tech would square off with Ole Miss in a regional meeting between to Women's College World Series qualifiers from last season. But this year, the Rebels are also led by a stud transfer, pitcher Emilee Boyer.
For Boyer, her trip back to West Texas likely brings back memories of ranging cotton fields and dust (lovely, I know). The senior right-hander was the NCAA DII national player of the year for West Texas A&M University in Canyon, which is located less than two hours away from Lubbock in the Texas panhandle (basically "right around the corner" in West Texas terms).
Boyer has been one of Ole Miss' most available pitchers, leading the team in total appearances and starts, complete games, and innings pitched. Her earned run average sits at 3.68.
Gerry Glasco Shares How He Got Into Softball
Texas Tech's second-year coach said that when he thinks of his best personal qualities, he cites dog training before softball.
Glasco detailed his first business in Mexico as a tour guide hunter, the tragic story of his youngest daughter's passing, and how he reunited with his oldest daughter through what first established their life-long bond: coaching softball.
Glasco shared his story for ESPN's "Game On" series, available below on YouTube.
The Red Raiders host Marist on Friday, May 15, at 3:30 p.m. Their regional matchup in the NCAA tournament will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
