Texas Tech star JT Toppin continues to build an All-American resume, and the Big 12 is taking notice.
The junior forward was named Big 12 Player of the Week after powering the Red Raiders to two key victories, highlighted by a statement overtime win over then-No. 1 Arizona.
It marks Toppin’s fourth weekly honor this season and the sixth of his career - a testament to his consistency and dominance in one of the nation’s toughest conferences.
Toppin delivered one of the most impressive performances in recent Big 12 history when he erupted for 31 points and 13 rebounds in Tech’s 78-75 overtime victory in Tucson.
The 30-point, 10-rebound outing was the ninth of his Texas Tech career and only the second such performance against a top-ranked team in conference history.
In a 78-44 blowout of Colorado, the Dallas native recorded 16 points and 18 rebounds, controlling the glass from start to finish. Across the two games, Toppin averaged 23.5 points and 15.5 rebounds while showcasing his ability to score at all three levels and dominate the paint.
Through the heart of Big 12 play, Toppin has become the engine of a Texas Tech team surging up the national rankings. His physicality on the boards, ability to finish through contact and expanding offensive tools have made him one of the most difficult matchups in the country.
Toppin’s award comes as part of a loaded week around the league. BYU freshman AJ Dybantsa earned Newcomer of the Week honors after averaging 28.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 7.5 assists in two wins for the Cougars.
Dybantsa poured in 36 points at Baylor and followed it with a 20-point, 13-rebound effort in an overtime victory over Colorado.
Joining Toppin and Dybantsa on the Big 12 Starting Five were Baylor’s Tounde Yessoufou, BYU’s Rob Wright and Houston’s Emanuel Sharp, each posting eye-catching stat lines in wins.
Still, for Texas Tech fans, the headline belongs to Toppin.
With March approaching and postseason seeding on the line, the Red Raiders are leaning heavily on their star forward.
If Toppin continues this pace - especially against ranked opponents - Texas Tech basketball will remain firmly in the Big 12 title conversation and poised for another deep NCAA Tournament run.
