The Tulane Green Wave held their cards close to their chest on the final scrimmage of fall camp ahead of the depth chart release on Monday.
New Orleans, La. – For those who were anticipating a big battle between Tulane Green Wave quarterbacks Kadin Semonza and Zeon Chriss-Gremillion, Saturday’s scrimmage on Day 14 of fall camp was a disappointment in that regard.
Semonza and Chriss-Gremillion each got two shorter periods where they both moved the ball considerably well until they got to the red zone before the majority of the scrimmage turned towards the threes and fours for the most part quarterbacked by Trace Johnson and Dagan Bruno, who have previously been eliminated from the quarterback competition.
Frankly, no answers were given on the final scrimmage on the final day of fall camp before “mock week” starts on Tuesday, and before the first depth chart is set to be released on Monday, Aug. 24.
That might indicate that the coaching staff already is leaning one way on the Week 1 starter and Saturday wasn’t going to move the needle much.
That’s why coaches are paid to make the decisions, and they certainly didn’t tip their hand.
Both of the competing signal callers had their moments, good and bad, but it’s hard to really dissect the limited snaps they had. At minimum, both were moving the ball with better command than last Saturday and the offense as a whole stalled no matter the quarterback when they entered the red zone.
The only touchdown of the day was an end around by Seth Gale in the final team period where Dagan Bruno threw a block.
For the coaches, that brought both positives and negatives on both sides of the ball. The defense was bad up until the red zone where they completely locked in, and vice versa on offense.
It could mean that the sides are just at a stalemate where they know each other a bit too well. But college football doesn’t have joint practices with other teams like the NFL to really test that.
And so is the end of fall camp. This next week is considered mock week ahead of the first week of game prep that will precede the season opener against the Duke Blue Devils.
It was a fall camp that had its moments, but probably not as many answers as some might have hoped.
At quarterback, the best solution might be in absence of a clear winner, to just pick one and build an offense around it.
Semonza is a bit of a better anticipator and has been more accurate as a whole in the passing game, but has had some poor decisions mixed in.
Chriss-Gremillion is a better runner and athlete, and that isn’t something he can totally show off in a non-live scrimmage setting.
It frankly depends on what offense head coach Will Hall wants to run, and that should be better illuminated upon the release of the first depth chart Tulane has really ever released ahead of the opening kickoff.
