The Tulane Green Wave have a tall hill to climb in their gauntlet of conference play.

The Tulane Green Wave did not do themselves any favors going into American Conference play as they dropped their league opener to the Army Black Knights and dug themselves into a 0-1 hole to start conference play.

Not just that, but they also sat at home on their bye week in Week 5 and watched several contenders get an even bigger lead on the race to capture the conference title, a feat looking considerably harder for the Green Wave after appearing in the last four straight, hosting three, and winning two.

Now, they sit considerably at the bottom of the standings as they look to get right against the top of the conference.

The Memphis Tigers are tied with the UTSA Roadrunners – aka, Tulane’s next two opponents – at 2-0 in league play and 5-1 overall.

Next are the surprising FAU Owls (4-1, 1-0), then the North Texas Mean Green (4-2, 2-0), the East Carolina Pirates (3-2, 1-0), and the Army Black Knights (3-2, 2-1), who all have a winning record in conference play.

The UAB Blazers (3-3, 1-1) and Temple Owls (2-4, 1-1) are even in their league slate.

Next up are those with losing records thus far, including the Green Wave.

The South Florida Bulls (4-2, 1-2) lead that slate, followed by the Navy Midshipmen (2-3, 1-2).

Those without a win in conference play are the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes (3-3, 0-2), then Tulane (2-3, 0-1), while the Rice Owls (1-5, 0-2) and Charlotte 49ers (0-6, 0-2) round out the standings.

The conference wins were the UTSA Roadrunners’ 31-24 over the South Florida Bulls, Army-Tulane 20-17, ECU-Rice 28-12, Navy-Tulsa 34-26, North Texas-Charlotte 50-10, and Memphis-UAB 38-13.

The Green Wave’s slate does not get easier from here on out.

After Memphis this Friday, they then play the surging Roadrunners – thankfully at home this time.

Here are the games to watch for the Wave in Week 7 for the opponents on their conference slate:

UTSA will host the Midshipmen this weekend. After the Roadrunners comes Charlotte on the road, who play at Temple.

The Wave will then host Tulsa for homecoming, who play at Rice, then Rice.

They’ll finish out their conference slate against North Texas, who will take their bye, and end at USF, who host Kent State this weekend.

There’s no slate that’s a given for the Green Wave. The 49ers and Rice Owls are the most beatable on paper.

But the next two weeks are season-defining. If they’re able to sneak out of that with a shot at the title, they’ll have to fend off a surprisingly reloaded Mean Green squad and a Bulls team that seems to be a bit lost in finding their footing under new leadership.
