The Tulane Green Wave secured another major position player on Friday morning, as wide receiver Zycarl Lewis Jr. announced that he'd be staying with the program heading into the 2026 season.
Although young, Lewis showed some flashes of greatness in the team's 2025 season, which ended with a victory over the North Texas Mean Green in the American Conference Championship Game and an eventual first round appearance in the College Football Playoff. There's no doubt that those experiences will be incredibly valuable to him as he continues his career, and he's shown signs that he can be the next primary offensive threat for his team.
Lewis appeared in all 14 games for the Green Wave this year, making at least one reception in 13 of those contests. The redshirt freshman finished the season with 24 receptions for a total of 330 yards and two touchdowns, averaging roughly 13.8 yards per catch. He had a season-best game against the East Carolina Pirates on October 9th, with two catches for 75 yards and a touchdown. Additionally, Lewis notched a season-high four catches for 47 yards and one score against the UTSA Roadrunners.
Lewis received some limited playing time as a freshman in the 2024 season before ultimately claiming his redshirt. He appeared in regular season matchups against the Southeastern Louisiana Lions and Temple Owls, as well as in the Gasparilla Bowl against the Florida Gators. Lewis finished 2024 with two receptions for 15 yards, all of which came against Southeastern Louisiana.
All in all, this is a huge retention in Uptown, especially as the program has seen quite a few wide receivers leave the program over the past few weeks. Standout players Omari Hayes and Shazz Preston both entered the transfer portal shortly after it opened, with the former committing to the Iowa State Cyclones and the latter still weighing his options by taking visits to various schools. Jimmy Calloway has also entered the portal, though his decision to do so came a bit later. Meanwhile, Tre Shackelford and Bryce Bohanon are both graduating, with NFL hopes still very much alive.
At this point, Tulane still definitely needs to capitalize and grab a few more wide receivers in the portal to fill out what was a robust WRs room in 2025. So far, the Green Wave has not locked down any transfer commitments to fill that position, but the team still has about a week left to pick up players.
