The Tulane Green Wave captured four spots in the top six in their penultimate regular season meet.

The Tulane Green Wave women’s cross country contingent had a strong showing on Saturday morning as they competed in the Nicholls XC Invitational.

They have competed now in three events as the cross country season starts to wind towards its finish since the season start in October.

At Nicholls Farm on Saturday, they saw all four women who competed in the event place in the top six.

Morgan Matthews delivered both a new personal best and a runner up finish in the women’s 5k race, ending with a time of 18:35.3 in the event.

She finished only second to Lorena Rangel Batres from the Tiger Olympians, who won the event with a time of 17:35.6.

Freshman Sophia Galiano-Sanchez was right behind Matthews in third place with a finish of 18:48.8.

Jasper Newton rounded out the top five with a fifth place finish of 19:04.9, and narrowly missing the top five was Eliza Brand with a time of 19:26.2, good for a sixth place finish.

Unfortunately, the Green Wave weren’t eligible for a team score due to only having four runners in the competition.

However, not only did all four of them place in the top six, but they secured two of the top three and three of the top five slots.

The only other program that matched Tulane’s showing of four top 10 finishers was the host, Nicholls. The Colonels ultimately won the team title with 16 total points.

The quartet had a strong individual showing but ultimately would finish with no team score.

This season, the women and men both competed in the Battle for New Orleans and the 47th Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational in Chicago, Il. The women and men both captured the first place title in the local New Orleans season opening event.

In the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational, the women finished in eight while the men took fifth place.

After their showing at Nicholls, Tulane will now get a “bye week” if you will before heading to a split set of meets on Friday, Oct. 16 that will close out their regular season campaign.

Part of the Wave will compete in the Pre-Nationals at Indiana State in Terre Haute, Indiana, while another contingent while head to College Station, Texas for the Arturo Barrios Invitational hosted by Texas A&M Aggies.

That meet will be their final in the regular season ahead of the American Conference Cross Country Championships.

That will be hosted by the Green Wave at Lake Oaks Park on Saturday, October 31.
