Keyone Jenkins’ late-game heroics and Tyren Hornes’ explosive breakout fueled a double-overtime shocker, as the Knights capitalized on costly penalties to dismantle the Cougars’ perfect season.

The UCF Knights' offense finally put together two 15-minute halves in their double-overtime thriller upset against the No. 2 BYU Cougars on Saturday.

UCF scored 39 points, the third-most this season and the most in conference play.

Coach Scott Frost and offensive coordinator Steve Cooper's playcalling tested BYU's ability to cover the field. They pushed the ball downfield, ran jet sweeps for their wide receivers and the blocking held up for big plays.

The Knights pulled off miracle plays in both overtime periods to keep their upset hopes alive, and the defense forced three straight incompletions to make program history.

Here are three takeaways from UCF's upset victory.

Keyone Jenkins Shines Under the Brightest Lights

Jenkins threw for a season-best 293 yards and three touchdowns, and added 35 rushing yards and one touchdown. The previous collapses against the then-No. 20 Houston Cougars and then-No. 18 Oklahoma State Cowboys showed he can light up the best teams.

Some of his best completions came under pressure from BYU edge rushers. He evaded a hurry, scrambled left and threw a 25-yard bullet to wide receiver Josh Derry to tie the game in overtime.

That was a magical moment UCF needed to stay alive and prevent another heartbreaking loss.

Tyren Hornes Breakout Game

The freshman continues to show he's a crucial part of the receiving corps. He caught six passes for 137 yards, a career best and quadrupled his performance from the Houston game.

Hornes had arguably one of the most important conversions that led to a score. Frost called a wide receiver screen on third-and-17 for Hornes, and he took it 56 yards.

He moved the chains from UCF's 29-yard line to BYU's 15-yard line. Jenkins punched in a 1-yard touchdown to regain the lead, 24-21.

Knights Capitalized on Cougars Penalties

Referees called a couple of game-changing penalties on BYU, giving UCF extra lives.

Defensive tackle Keanu Tanuvasa was flagged for a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty during the final minutes of the fourth quarter. His mistake put the Knights in field goal range after referees reviewed a supposed Jenkins fumble as an incomplete pass.

The Cougars were penalized for roughing the kicker after kicker Will Stone converted a 26-yard field goal in second overtime. UCF earned a reset of downs, and Jenkins threw a 4-yard touchdown to tight end Grayson Brousseau.

Those two penalties out of their five cost them the prized No. 2 ranking they dethroned Notre Dame for last Saturday.
