Clocking a blazing 4.39-second 40-yard dash, the undrafted speedster is leveraging a record-setting contract to battle for a depth chart spot in the New England backfield.

Myles Montgomery is making his case to become the third-string running back for the New England Patriots after an impressive mandatory three-day minicamp from June 9-11.

Montgomery's speed has impressed the Patriots coaching staff, despite how hard it is to evaluate a running back in non-contact drills. The former UCF Knight ran a 4.39 40-yard dash at UCF's pro day on March 25.

He is competing against New England's seventh-round pick Jam Miller and Terrell Jennings, who is in his second year. Montgomery has his work cut out for him, but he's making the most out of the opportunities he receives.

The former Knight told reporters at UCF's pro day that he wanted to help his team win in whatever way he could. Running backs coach Jimmy Beal had high praise for Montgomery and said Montgomery is going to make a team love him, and that's the Patriots right now.

"He's going to work," Beal told reporters on April 24. "He's going to do whatever. He's going to make somebody love him. And I think that's the cool thing, that he's never going to show any kind of remorse or whatever for it. He's just going to do it."

New England locked the 5-foot-11 running back in for the next three years, paying him the most money an undrafted free agent received in franchise history. Montgomery is earning $272,500 in guarantees.

His contract surpasses the previous record for the Patriots when they signed tight end C.J. Dippre last offseason. Dippre signed for $264,000, which Montgomery and cornerback Channing Canada ($267,500) surpassed this offseason.

Montgomery started his collegiate career at Cincinnati, spending two seasons in Ohio. He rushed for 548 yards and four touchdowns on 80 carries. The Jacksonville, Florida, native decided to enter the transfer portal and return home.

He transferred to UCF, where he spent his final two years playing for the Black and Gold. Montgomery served as a backup to Denver Broncos running back RJ Harvey in his first season, but broke out during his senior campaign.

The Knights needed a lead, workhorse back after Harvey declared for the 2025 NFL Draft, and Montgomery stepped up. He rushed for 705 yards and four touchdowns on 143 carries, and added 182 yards on 17 receptions.

Montgomery continues to impress New England with his skills repeatedly and has earned praise for it. The competition is step for the third-string running back, but the former Knight could win the battle and earn playing time for the Patriots next season.
