Texas standout Jonathan Barnes bolsters the Knights' secondary as UCF extends its recruiting reach into the Lone Star State, securing a pivotal piece for their future defensive rotation.
The UCF Knights received a flurry of commitments on Sunday following official visits, and 2027 defensive back Jonathan Barnes became the third player to announce his intentions to play at UCF.
Barnes' commitment strengthens the defensive back depth, joining Kash Kolbow as the other recruit in the secondary. He also joins tight end Tanner Ehmen (Alabaster, Alabama) as the second out-of-state talent.
The 6-foot-1 defensive back is from Duncanville, Texas, and plays for Duncanville High School. Barnes is an unranked prospect, but star ratings don't always accurately depict how talented a player is.
He told MagicRoundtable and Knights247 reporter Andrew Cherico that UCF showed it had big plans for him. Coach Scott Frost and his staff have made it an emphasis to visualize how recruits can arrive in Orlando and contribute.
Landing another defensive back recruit is significant for UCF. It is a senior-laden position group led by Jayden Bellamy, Antione Jackson, Demari Henderson and Braeden Marshall.
The Knights will likely become active in next year's transfer portal cycle to rebuild the defensive back depth. That's where high school recruiting comes into play.
Before Barnes, UCF struggled to receive a commitment from another defensive back recruit. The program lost out on Nazir Pitchford (Kansas) and Zy Tassin (Wake Forest) -- Tassin viewed the program as a frontrunner last week before Wake Forest made a push for him.
Now, they've recouped some losses after receiving commitments from two other recruits. Running back Omari St. Fort and EDGE Dontallis Render announced their intention to play for the Knights Sunday afternoon, a few minutes apart from one another.
St. Fort and Render are in-state recruits, while Barnes is out of state. UCF's influence in its home state is apparent, but extending its reach to other states is also crucial.
The Knights now have eight hard commits, according to their 2027 football commits page on 247Sports. They will continue hosting more recruits for official visits and leave lasting first impressions on them.
Frost and his staff did a good job this weekend, impressing recruits and receiving commitments shortly after the official visit ended. It is important to maintain momentum and continue rounding out the 2027 recruiting class.
UCF also hosted four-star running back Caden Waye and 6-foot-7 offensive lineman Michael Golden during the weekend. Golden told Cherico that he hopes to commit to a school by the end of June, and the Knights are rising in his list.
The Knights' 2027 recruiting class is taking form and could become even more talented and deeper in the next several weeks.
