While Alonza Barnett III commands the starting role, a fierce battle brews between veteran transfer Keyone Jenkins and high-potential newcomers for the crucial backup spot in Orlando.
Since acquiring James Madison transfer quarterback Alonza Barnett III in the transfer portal this offseason, UCF has enjoyed a luxury that the program has not had in the past few years - a bonafide starting QB.
There has been no doubt or questioning from players or staff about Barnett being the lead guy in the QB room, as the College Football Playoff veteran has displayed leadership and confidence around the facilities.
But, the matter of who Barnett's backup will be is still up in the air as the Knights approach Fall camp.
Florida International University transfer Keyone Jenkins and Boise State transfer Kaleb Annett are the next two gunslingers on the depth chart.
Jenkins, who is the most-likely choice, has thrown for for nearly 7,000 yards in his three-year career.
Given the nickname "Lights out," Jenkins continues the trend of in-state transfers for UCF, as the program has done well to keep players looking for a new home in Florida.
Last season was a bit of a down year for Jenkins, who posted career lows in passing yards (1,742) and passing touchdowns (9).
But, the Miami, FL, native still brings a level of experience to the room that will be crucial if Barnett misses time.
Behind Jenkins, I project Annett to be the next signal caller in line, as the former 3-star recruit is yet to take a collegiate snap.
He was a high-level producer in high school however, as Annett finished his career with 4,163 yards and 41 touchdowns, recording nine games with three or more touchdown passes.
As a senior, Annett threw for 2,751 yards and 30 touchdowns, adding 197 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
Unlike Jenkins, Annett brings an element of youth and potential development to the room, as he could see significant action post-Barnett.
Four-star freshman quarterback Rocco Marriott is another interesting piece of the puzzle, as he flipped his commitment to join UCF this upcoming season. Marriott was previously committed to James Madison.
Standing at 6'4 and weighing 220 pounds, Marriott's physical tools are advanced for his age and many Knights fans are excited to see him in black and gold.
One user on X, @dali_drama,= tweeted prior to his official flip, saying "Rocco Marriott's build for a freshman QB moves me. Close." That's just what the Knights did.
Marriott will be a sponge this season, learning the ins-and-outs of college football from the experienced players on the roster.
Do not be surprised if he is the lead candidate to start in 2027.
