The backup quarterback’s four-touchdown performance dismantled No. 2 BYU in double overtime, fueling a historic upset and revitalizing the Knights’ trajectory within the crowded Big 12 race.
After competing and falling just short against their two prior ranked opponents, the UCF Knights won their biggest game of Scott Frost's second-era, knocking off No. 2 BYU 39-31.
Not only is it the highest-ranked opponent ever beaten by the Knights, but it also marks a potential turning point in the team's season.
With Utah the lone unbeaten remaining in the conference, UCF has an opportunity to make a late-season push up the Big 12 leaderboards.
Backup quarterback Keyone Jenkins' time as the starting quarterback may be coming to an end, but he led the offense admirably and may have some teams wondering why they didn't do their homework on "Lights Out" when he was in the transfer portal.
In Saturday's historic win, Jenkins accounted for four total touchdowns, while keeping the ball out of harms way and outplaying BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier.
Jenkins' ability to extend plays with his legs is a big asset, using his lefty cannon to fire balls into tight windows.
After BYU struck first in first overtime, Jenkins escaped from the pocket on the first play of UCF's offensive possession, getting free and finding the Knights' top receiver Josh Derry near the front left pylon.
UCF started with the ball first in second overtime, with Jenkins finding third-string tight end Grayson Brousseau on a flat route for the eventual game-winning score.
Following the win, Jenkins was extremely humble and grateful for the opportunity, giving the praise to God.
"I had a vision of us winning," Jenkins added.
True freshman wide receiver Tyren Hornes was by-far Jenkins' top pass-catcher, recording six catches for 137 yards.
Coming into the game, Hornes had just 111 total receiving yards on the season, but found his groove at the best time possible.
Throughout the games prior, Hornes had shown flashes of his big-play ability and speed, converting on multiple opportunities against the Houston Cougars.
Jenkins leaned on the Bradenton, FL, native on late downs, showing the increasing trust Hornes is earning.
With Duane "Speedy" Thomas Jr. making his season debut after a lingering injury, UCF's receiving room continues to get stronger.
If starting quarterback Alonza Barnett III is able to return, he will be rewarded with a group of pass-catchers gaining confidence and continuity alongside one another.
In Jenkins' case, if this is his final start for the time-being, he will be remembered as the UCF quarterback who brought the program one of it's biggest victories ever.
During his last three games against ranked Big 12 opponents, Jenkins totaled 811 passing yards, 10 touchdowns, and just. two interceptions, showing he belongs at the Power 4 level.
